A game of Rum and Pirates by Fadest

This game is still a very early alpha POC (Plouf of Concept) and is not representative of final product.

Game objective:

Become the most respected pirate of the Carribean Tavern . There is only one way to do so: get more Pirates Points than other players.

The Carribean Tavern is a a mix between a boardgame and min arcade games.
The pitch sentence was "Imagine a North & South like (game by Infogrames on computers in early 90's) for 4 players, based on Pirates Cove (boardgame by Alan R. Moon / Days of Wonder)"

Number of players: 4

Note: the console can manage up to 3 players, but right now, they do not have strategy, do randow choice and do no action during mini games.

Course of a game:

Selection of players screen:

Characteristics of pirates and their ships are random.

11 points are given upon 4 criterias :

  • Hull: determine max rum loading capacity
  • Navigation wheel/sailing: ship maneuverability/speed during battles and mini games
  • Cannon : determine shooting capacity dunring battles and mini-games
  • Crew: Requires one crew member per cannon to best utilize this ability

Jagpad 0 :

  • Left/right : select another pirate
  • B : launch the game (be sure every player has selected their pirate)

Other Jagpads :

  • B => associate a pirate and color to the jagpad
  • Left/right : select another pirate

These characteristics can be improved in game for money by going to the corresponding islands.

POC Note: not all characteristics are necessarily used during the mini-games

10 rounds of games composed of the following events in order:

1. Determination of rewards on each island.

2. Destination Selection

Each player selects the desired destination on the jagpad numeric pad.

Note: for more fun, you can print, laminate and cut the overlays. This way, you will be able to select your destination island on a representation of the map, rather than with numeric values.

  • 1 at Cannon Island: improve the cannon capacity
  • * at Crew Island: hire crew
  • 6 at Ile aux coques: improve the hull capacity
  • # at Ile aux voiles: improve sail capacity
  • 9 at Ile de la Taverne: sell your rum for money and pirate points

Note: by pressing B, you can see the characteristics of your ship

3. Move and combat if needed

There can only be one pirate ship on the cannon/crew/hull and sail islands. If several players have chosen the same island, a naval battle then takes place, and only the winner can remain, the other(s) will be moved to the Sargasso Sea in the center of the screen.

Note: this phase is still in alpha version and is present as a placeholder/demo, movements will be refined, and the combat phase reworked

4. Calamities

The 2 calamities move:

  • The cloud moves sequentially between the islands:  Sailing -> crews -> cannon -> hulls

It can possibly change state (color more and more gray – 3 levels possible)

  • Poulpy moves randomly to one of the 4 improvement islands (except the one where the cloud is located)

If a player is present on the island where a calamity is located (and if the cloud is at storm level), then a 1v3 mini-game is triggered. If the player loses, he is sent to the Sargasso Sea, if he wins, he gets a reward.

Only the base of the Cannon Island mini-game is present as a demo, and incomplete:

  • The 3 players each play a cannon and must identify the only player among the fleet of ships (number of cannonballs unlimited for the moment but will be limited by the capacity of the ship)
  • The solo player must locate his ship among the fleet of 15 ships and try to win the race (B to advance). All 14 AI ships advance randomly
  • The solo player earns a reward (not implemented) if he wins the race
  • Solo player loses if sunk by one of the other players (sent at Sargasso Sea)
  • In other cases (an AI wins the race), nothing happens

5. Rewards

Players present on an improvement island earn rewards (rum, gold, pirate points).

Please note: you cannot carry more rum than your capacity in the shell.

6. Improvements

Players present on an improvement island can improve this characteristic by spending gold. The rule is simple: to access level n, you have to pay n gold coins

7. Tavern Sales

Players present at the tavern (the only island or several players can be present in a spirit of brotherhood and alcoholic libations) sell their rum for gold and pirate points

After 10 rounds, the end screen is displayed and players are ranked according to their result.

The deciding criteria are in order:

  • Highest number of pirate points
  • In case of a tie, greater number of gold
  • In case of a tie, more rum in stock
  • In case of a tie, greater sum of the 4 characteristics of the ship
